Who we are

Soil Carbon Futures is a global community of experts dedicated to advancing research, innovation, and action in soil carbon storage and soil health.

We foster international collaboration to develop and scale science-based solutions that enhance soil health, build climate resilience, and support sustainable land management across diverse regions.

We envision a future where all soils (agriculture, forests, grasslands, wetlands, and urban areas) are globally recognised and sustainably managed as critical assets for climate mitigation, food security, and ecosystem integrity.

Our history

Formerly the Soil Carbon International Research Consortium, Soil Carbon Futures grew out of the Horizon Europe project ORCaSa (2022–2025), and was officially launched during the first edition of the European Soil Mission Week in Madrid, in November 2023.

ORCaSa built a global community committed to advancing soil carbon solutions across all soils.

This work now continues under Soil Carbon Futures, supporting the EU Soil Deal and a global vision of healthy soils.

Our strategic objectives

We aim to mobilise the global scientific community to increase and maintain soil carbon for climate mitigation, sustainable agriculture, and ecosystem resilience.

We do this by fostering interdisciplinary collaboration through a regionally structured network of Ambassadors, enabling knowledge exchange and coordinated action across geographical areas.

We also work to translate cutting-edge research into practical solutions, supporting the implementation of the Paris Agreement, European Green Deal, and national climate commitments.

We partner with major international efforts (“4 per 1000” Initiative, FAO’s Global Soil Partnership, Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases), to maximise impact and avoid duplication.

Our values

  • Co-development of interdisciplinary research activities and solutions across regions, disciplines, and sectors.
  • Openness & sharing thanks to open science and collective access to trusted research, data, methods, practices, and tools (Impact4Soil).
  • Transparency
We ensure clarity in our processes, sources, and partnerships—grounded in evidence and open knowledge.

What we do

To turn knowledge into action, Soil Carbon Futures offers three key services: a global platform (Impact4Soil), a harmonised MRV framework, and a shared research and innovation agenda for soils worldwide.
